Sustainable Furniture

Sustainability isn’t just a buzz word that we use. We care deeply about the fact that we are using one of natures true gifts to produce what we make.

True Sustainability

What is TRUE sustainability?

Well, contrary to some perspectives, sustainability in our opinion doesn’t start and end with saying you plant a tree for every order or something of that ilk. We all know this doesn’t mean they actually plant a tree for every order, they just pay a fee to another company who promise to plant trees on behalf of other companies, so they can pretend they are carbon free. Sounds complicated to us. Like most things in life, the best things are actually really very simple. Sustainability from our perspective splits into three important factors. Firstly, only make things that humans need (like beds and tables) from natural materials (like wood) that CAN BE REPLACED. Secondly, make those things in a way that means that it DOESN’T NEED REPLACING. And lastly but certainly not least as this one makes the first two count for something, MAKE TIMELESS DESIGNS. This makes sure that the desire to own and use this item lasts as long as the items quality.

If you cut down a tree and made furniture for your family, you made it properly, and designed it thoughtfully, you would never need to cut down another tree for the production of furniture. Plant more trees and you can replace the tree that built your furniture a hundred times before your time on earth ends. That is in our view, TRUE SUSTAINABILITY. Put simply, you put back more than you take.

Built To Last Forever

Traditional glued and dowelled mortice and tenon joints are so strong that their strength far outweighs its purpose. These simple but highly effective woodworking joints have been used by human beings for thousands of years.

Made From The Worlds Most Natural Material

We need nature far more than nature needs us. In fact, without us, nature would be better than fine. The more time we spend outside of nature, the easier it is to forget about the deep connection we share with it, and the less likely we are to remember just how much we need it. It just comes down to respect and education.

Is anybody perfect?

It’s one thing understanding the fundamentals of sustainability, it’s another thing leading by example. Very few people on earth today can claim true carbon neutral credentials. Whilst we are sincere and passionate advocates for sustainability and genuinely respect and love nature, we are also aware of the fact that we have plenty of room for improvement. We still use some gas heat for one of our showrooms, which we hope to replace with heating from our own briquettes sometime in 2026. We do currently heat our workshop and warehouse with our briquettes. We also deliver our furniture in a diesel vehicle which we would love to switch for electric. There are other ways to reduce power consumption in the workshop that we plan to work on in the future. Everything we do after all is a work in progress.
