Handmade Solid Wood Bed with Extra-Thick Posts
Built for those who value bold, honest design and true craftsmanship, the Chunky Plank Bed is our most substantial version of the original Plank Bed — now featuring super-thick 125mm (5-inch) solid posts for an even more powerful presence in the room.
Just like the original, every detail of this solid wood bed is made to last. The headboard and footboard are constructed from 5-inch thick slow-grown Canadian pine posts, built up with 1.5-inch thick planks for a striking and timeless look. The removable side rails are crafted from solid planks and secured with traditional glued and pegged mortice and tenon joints — a method used for centuries to ensure strength and longevity.
Thick, 27mm solid pine slats offer firm, reliable support for your mattress, completing a design that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
This chunky wooden bed is entirely handmade in our Derbyshire workshop by the Ashton & Coleman team, using traditional techniques and a whole lot of pride. Each piece is hand-finished to bring out the unique grain and character of the timber. Where possible, we also deliver and install your bed ourselves — ensuring the same level of care from our hands to your home.

Build quality: Handmade by Ashton And Coleman using 5″ bed posts glue laminated up from Canadian pine. Glued and dowelled 3/4 inch mortice and tenon joints fix the Quebec pine planks to the posts. Extremely strong 3/4 inch mortice and tenons connect the side rails to the posts. Solid metal brackets are screwed to the side rails and the posts to keep the mortice and tenon’s together and also allow them to come apart for delivery. But don’t worry, you can take these beds apart and put them back together extremely easily and over and over again without losing the quality or strength of the bed.
