Who are Smeaton Brothers?

The Smeaton Brothers family have been manufacturing mattresses and beds in Yorkshire for over 130 years. They are now in the fifth generation. Smeaton Brothers or Health Beds as it’s otherwise known are masters in their industry, and we are certainly fortunate to have such a world-class business that manufactures just up the road in Rotherham, flying the flag for Independent British manufacturers. They are therefore the perfect fit for Ashton And Coleman Furniture who strive to offer the best quality products and service to their customers.

Heritage Bed Makers.

The Smeaton Brothers family have been manufacturing mattresses and beds in Yorkshire for over 130 years. In the beginning, it was as you may imagine a one-man venture started by Henry Smeaton who made palliasse mattresses filled with straw under the arches of a bridge in Masborough, Rotherham. He sold these mattresses to farmers at Retford market who brought their farm animals and produce for sale.

In celebration Henry often spent the money he earned in the hostelries and public houses on the way home, leaving the horse to find its own way home. The family tradition of bedmaking was passed down to Henry’s son Arthur and Grandsons Henry (known as Harry), Leonard and Harold. Arthur Smeaton served in the First World War with his two brothers Ernest and George who incredibly all returned safe after serving in Ypres in Belgium. Coincidentally Smeaton Brothers still source some of their woven damask fabrics and tickings from the same area of Belgium they served in the war.

In the Second World War Harry received his call-up papers and served as a carpenter/fitter in the RAF in the jungles of Ceylon, India and Burma. Thankfully Harry returned safely in 1946 and used his carpentry skills and family bed-making tradition to set up a business with his eldest brother Harold and Smeaton Brothers was born. They quickly realised that the business wouldn’t support two families and an agreement was formed where Harry continued running the bed-making business.

In 1968 Harry built a factory in King Street Rotherham which the council assured him would become an industrial area. Six years later the council compulsory purchased the land and Harry had to move on. So in 1974 Harry bought some land in Masborough on Sarah Street and built a new factory, ironically coming full circle back to the place where his Great Grandfather Henry first started the Smeaton family bed-making tradition.

In 2008 before the worst recession in living history, Tony and David (Harry’s Son and Grandson) bought some land and built another purpose-built bedding factory at Thurcroft on the outskirts of Rotherham, where Smeaton Brothers can be found today. In recent years Toby and Lucy Smeaton have joined the family business and added a fifth generation to the Smeaton story.

Why are natural mattresses better?

For one, and it’s a big one. The effect a natural product has on the environment is absolutely priceless. Our Smeaton brothers collection is 100% recyclable. That means zero to landfill. It’s not just better, it’s incredible. Not only are you getting a comfortable, chemical-free, luxurious night’s sleep but you can sleep even easier knowing you aren’t going to have an unnecessarily negative impact on the environment by choosing to purchase and advocate a product that will harm the environment after you have finished with it. So is a natural mattress better? It shouldn’t even be a question.

Are natural mattresses more comfortable?

Comfort is something of a subjective perspective, it’s actually wrong to say they are more comfortable. It’s more of a case that finding the right natural mattress for you is the most important thing to focus on.

What is a pocket-sprung mattress?

Pocket-sprung mattresses are the latest in mattress technology. In years gone by the springs of a mattress were notoriously uncomfortable due to their size and their tendency to poke through the structure of the mattress into the person trying to get a good night’s sleep. With pocket-sprung mattresses, each individual spring is sewn into a honeycomb of material pockets that contain the spring completely, thus making a connected layer of enclosed springs that work together as a unit and distribute the weight of the person sleeping across the entire layer of springs. The amount of springs (1000, 2000 etc) is a choice made by the consumer based on what they feel is the most comfortable for them. Some mattresses have more than one layer of springs enabling a greater quantity of springs per mattress that allows more air space for additional breathing of the mattress and a different feel of comfort.

Are Smeaton Brothers mattresses made in Great Britain?

Absolutely. They are the champions of British-made mattresses and reside in Yorkshire where they began their story over 130 years ago.

Why should you invest in a Smeaton Brothers Mattress?

Like most things in life, the things we need that benefit us long term are an investment as they usually cost more than the products out there designed to be fast and cheap, that need replacing. At Ashton & Coleman, we champion the traditional concept of making and selling products that offer not the cheapest product but the best value for money. Buy one Smeaton Brothers mattress and it will serve you for many more years than cheaper inferior models, of course, while your Smeaton Brothers mattress outlasts all other mattresses it also outperforms all other mattresses. Basically you get a better night’s sleep every night for many more years without needing to replace it. And when you are ready to purchase another one your old Smeaton Brothers mattresses are fully recyclable and eco-friendly.

The importance of good quality sleep.

It’s been widely spoken about, written about and publicised that a good night’s sleep is not just important but vital to a healthy lifestyle. many of us are busy with life, pushing ahead and trying to do it all. With family life, business, work, social lives etc it’s easy to forget how important it is to make sure you get a full forty winks. Sometimes thirty winks would be something, but if you’re at least getting comfortable chemical-free sleep, that has to count for something. Well, getting a full night’s sleep has actually been scientifically proven to not only support your mental health and happiness but actually extend your life expectancy significantly. A famous person once said, “You need two important things in life. A good mattress and a good pair of shoes. Because if you’re not in one, you are in the other”. We can’t really help with your shoes but we can certainly help with a mattress.

How long will a Smeaton Brothers Mattress last?

It does totally depend on the amount of use it has, but based on industry expectations you should technically change any mattress at the 8-10 years mark. I have however spoken with customers who have had their Smeaton Brothers mattress for 15 years with no issues at all.

How often should you turn a Mattress?

Not every mattress is a turnable mattress, however, the majority of our natural Smeaton Brothers mattresses are and they should be turned and flipped on a regular basis. Anything from 1-3 months we think is sufficient to care for the lifespan of your mattress. But again it is subjective depending on the user, and personal preference.
