Our Mill Sawn Pine Furniture

Our Mill Sawn Pine furniture has always been finished with our Classic wax finish which looks great but we thought we would expand the options for our customers by developing 5 more colour finishes. The character of our Mill Sawn Pine furniture is always the same regardless of the colour you choose but the finished article can look very different when you choose a different finish and can give a very different look or style to your room. How customers dress their rooms around our furniture designs completely changes the overall look. Our Mill Sawn Pine furniture is a chameleon when it comes to styling as it easily sits in a variety of interior styles. Opening up the options of colours for our customers seriously increases that scope for variety. Our Plank Bed in a driftwood finish for instance might sit more comfortably in a more modern minimalist environment than say the dark finish. One of our Grand Lowboy’s in the classic finish or the antique finish might suit a barn conversion or farmhouse style better than the natural finish. The other aspect of the reason to develop further options of colour was that after all of our assumptions as to where we think certain finishes may look better, it is simply our perspective. The fact that we all have a different opinion on what we think may look better is a clear indicator that we needed to offer more colour options within our range of furniture. Its not for us to tell our customers what they should have in their home. All Ashton & Coleman has to do is make quality natural wood furniture that looks and works great, that lasts a lifetime. The colour choice is frankly non of our business. What is our business is happy customers.
The Colour Options

Driftwood Finish
We use a grey stain that we developed especially in the workshop to stain the timber. After fully drying we wax the each piece with two coats of a specially developed wax that is similar to a limed wax finish. The overall look of the driftwood finish is really fresh and modern but as with all of our mill sawn pine furniture is absolutely full of character.
Natural
With our natural finish we have to pay particular attention to the level of character that we leave on each piece. After sanding we wax the wood with two coats of a clear wax to seal the timber and give protection. The overall look is very Scandinavian. The Mill Sawn Surface of our furniture however just adds a little more character to the finished piece.
Light
We were often asked when customers were looking around our showroom whether there was a lighter option than the classic wax finish and we would always work something out for each customer that asked. The light option is our answer to those questions. It still has an element of warmth in the tone but it feels a little more modern in the room than the classic wax finish.
Antique
The antique finish was a little harder to perfect as it just slightly altering the process clearly changed the end result. After many rounds of tests we worked out which level of stain worked with which combination of waxes. We landed on a colour and tone that is closer to the tones usually found in 100 year old pitch pine or reclaimed redwood flooring. The antique finish has a warmth and tone that feels slightly more romantic, as if there is even more story in the character of the furniture.
Classic
What can we say about the classic wax wood finish. Other than its a classic. Well its definitely been a popular choice. And its not a surprise that it continues to be a popular choice. The golden tones and warmth that surrounds the character of the timber finish fills the room with a cosy vibe that fits in to a wide variety of home interior styles. We called it the classic because it is classic in that it doesn’t go out of fashion.
Dark
A deeper, richer look to our furniture with tones of walnut. Whether you have one piece of furniture in the room as an accent to an eclectic modern interior style or whether you have a full room setting for a more traditional look you wont be disappointed in the character that this finish brings out in the timber.

The Problem With Wood Samples
We make the samples in house and make sure we make them in a way that represents the finished article the best way we can. The most important thing to remember about samples is that they are ‘samples’. Literally speaking they are a small sample of a much bigger piece of furniture that is made from a natural material that is full of character. Even when the same maker, makes the same design of furniture, technically speaking each piece will be completely unique every time they make it. No two trees have ever been the same in the history of Planet Earth and no two pieces of furniture made from natural wood will therefor ever be the same either. With this in mind we respectfully ask our customers to use the wood samples as a guide only and always recommend visiting one of our showrooms to experience the character of our furniture in person. Nothing beats seeing, touching and smelling the beauty of natural wood furniture in your home.
